A spider’s web reflecting the morning sun.

The spider’s touch, how exquisitely fine!
Feels at each thread, and lives along the line.

Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius. ~Pietro Aretino

I hate to admit it but  the last couple of frosts did most of my garden in.

There are a few random survivors,

but mostly it’s gone

Time to clean it all up.

 Call it a year.

   Live from the memories.

Live for the possibilities of next years’ gardens.

One of the most delightful things about a garden is the anticipation it provides.  ~W.E. Johns

Looking out my window this morning I was amazed by the scenery.  It was as if beautiful landscaping was done in my yard, all in white.

Turns out Jack, Jack Frost that is, was doing his handiwork on my window.  His intricate art is to be held in awe.  Each sprig of frost looks as if it grew like a fern from the ground.

They are paintings in ice that really look like a scenic winter wonderland. frost

Or you could say they look sharp, edgy and jagged.

Either way it sure beats the frigid scene that waits behind them.

If it has to be cold, reallllly cold,  I would just as soon see this wonderful artistry when I look to the window.

It warms my heart.  Thanks Jack!

It helps shorten these long winter days when there isn’t much to do gardening wise except plan and dream and remember how pretty your garden was last summer.

But before you know it, spring will arrive and those houseplants will become wall flowers that we barely notice…

We took a drive in the 17 degree weather to enjoy the bright sunshine and crisp day.  Luckily we were warmly in our heated car as we took in the views. web-k-078

Along the Susquehanna River were these crows on Sumac trees.  It almost looked like a blackbird tree with many of them waiting to be picked.web-k-108

Normally I don’t like crows, because they are loud, they are scavengers, and remind me of Ravens that of course I identify with evil or death.  Today for some reason, they caught my attention.  web-k-090

After some reading,  I learned that American Crows are actually very inteligent birds that are social and are most often seen in groups rather than alone. crow

They often stay together in year round family groups which consist of the mating pair and their offspring of the past two years.  web-k-117They also congregate in large numbers in the winter. That explains the large flock we saw today gathered on the river.crows at the river

Another interesting fact I learned is that the  oldest crow in captivity died at the age of 59.  In the wild the oldest recorded was 16.  I had no idea they could live that long.

Pack up all my care and woe,
Here I go,
Singing low,
Bye bye blackbird,
Where somebody waits for me,
Sugar’s sweet, so is she,
Bye bye
Blackbird! ~ Lyrics from Bye Bye Blackbird

Fresh flowers always perk up the bleakness of winter.

My Christmas Cactus started blooming again.web-flowers-015

 Works for me.

My miniature rose is still blooming although some of the flowers are ready to drop.  web-flowers-004

I have to buy a Cyclamen every January because I get so used to all that Christmas color and after you put it all away~ a Cyclamen brings color back in to the house. They always feel like an after christmas pick me up.web-flowers-027

  And who can’t use that?
