The rain continues but I have decided to not let it dampen my gardening spirit.  Out I went this afternoon into the wet tall grass to see what my spring garden is looking like.

The rain seems to go on and on and I am afraid I am missing all of the colors that are so beautiful this time of year.  The Lilacs and Iris are blooming, and my vegetable garden is waiting to be complete. 

 I decided to go ahead and put in a few of my seeedlings today to spite the rain.  You never know around here if you should wait until Memorial Day like everyone advises for a last frost date, or go for it. 

 Our weather this year has been chilly and VERY wet, but honestly I am tired of waiting so I have put in some of my vegetables and some flowers. 

We are going away for a week and hopefully I won’t be starting from scratch when we return because everything drown or froze while we were away.

We finally had a nice couple of days with temperatures in the fifties and even up to 60. Even the bees were busy taking advantage of the spring weather. 

 It felt so good to be out in my yard even if it was just cleaning things up and preparing our raised beds for warm weather to come.  That’s the only good thing about our long winters….spring is all the sweeter when it finally arrives.

  But today as I ventured out for a walk, I noticed these cute little snowdrops ready to bloom.  I was so surprised because I didn’t even know they were there.  A little farther into the yard and I found my pussy willows ready to bloom. 

There were buds on the lilac bushes as well as some irises greening up a bit.  A few random daffodils and hyacinths are poking through the dirt with their yellow leaves looking for some sunshine.  I have to say I was very surprised to find all these signs of spring when there has been such foul weather of late. 

I expected to show only dried sedum and my snowman this month, but I was pleasantly surprised today. 

The weather is supposed to be mild today so I will be out there looking for more delightful signs of spring springing. Hopefully March will follow the saying and go out like a lamb….

 To most, Spring arrives with the crocus, snowdrops, tulips and daffodils. I too get very excited when they show their pretty faces but I don’t get to enjoy them nearly enough because it is usually too cold in this northeast climate to sit and look at them. It’s usually not even nice enough to work in the garden so that you can be around them for a bit.  So for me, I really count gardening weather to be here when my favorite perennials begin to grow. 

  When I stroll around the gardens and start to see them coming along, the old stand bys that give me the feeling that spring is here and summer isn’t too far behind. 

To me those plants are the anchors of my garden.  They are old fashioned and loved by many.  In fact most gardens contain at least one or more of them. These are peonies, lilacs,  iris, bleeding heart, roses, hydrangeas, hostas, climatis and violets. 

 For some that may even be their entire garden~ planted years ago and faithfully returning year after year. 

I get a spring in my step when they start emerging from the dirt eventhough I am always nervous that they have ventured out too soon.

 Somehow they survive and reward us with their beautiful flowers and luscious green leaves.

 Those are the days I am dreaming of.

Working in my garden today, I was taken back by the lovely scent of lilacs. 

 Their delicate fragance floats in the air in little wisps that catch your attention.

  They are such pretty flowers in shades of purple, periwinkle and white. 

 I have planted many lilacs in the 3 years since we bought this house, just for that small window of spring when they will speckle my view with purple and fill the air with that oh so lovely scent.

For now they are young and I don’t get as many to pick as I would like, but as luck would have it, my son’s entire yard is bordered on one side by many many lilac trees. 

Needless to say I went over there and picked myself some. 

One bouquet for the dining room and one for my bedroom. 

 You can’t have too many flowers especially ones that smell this good.

 There was plenty of wind but at least it was sunny and mild. 

 It felt good to be out there working in my garden.

 At the end of the day I snapped a few pictures of what’s going on in this yard of mine. 

There is quite a mix showing up this week.

 The temperatures have been mild the last couple of days which makes it nice to take a stroll and see what is growing. 

I am surprised to see so many flowers this soon in spring time. 

There is a frost warning again tonight though. I hope all of these haven’t come out too early. 

 I am hoping mother Nature knows what she is doing.
