I chose this for my GGW photo contest entry. It is one of my favorite places in a garden that I also have a photo of. I love the spill over effect of the roses on the fence as they lead you to the lake on a crisp, early summer day. Their colors contrasted with the sky and clouds. They were old fashioned roses that had grown there for a long time. I can’t think of a better view or a place I would rather sit to enjoy a beautiful summer day. This was in the yard of a winery on Seneca lake.

My wonderful husband brought me a dozen roses yesterday.

What a treat and he didn’t even know I needed an R word for today’s post.

He knows that I am in desperate need of a flower fix now that Jack Frost has stolen them all away from my garden.

Flowers are blooming

away today after yesterday’s soaking rain.

My plants seem to have given a sigh of relief now that they have had a good long drenching.

We could use even more rain but I keep hoping it doesn’t choose Saturday to give it to us. I am throwing a baby shower brunch and rain is not invited.

This cosmo is one of the pom pom varieties. It is really pretty.

These pansies as well as the dianthus continue to flourish.

They are dependable as well as beautiful.

I am happy to see my roses finally showing their pretty faces.

The red lupine continues to thrill me. I did have two of them break in the heavy rain, one had a bud on it.

It makes me sad to lose even one of them but worse things could happen so I will count my blessings.

Red, Love, Chocolate and Flowers

Valentines Day is the best.

It’s all about love and the color red.

Any day that involves the giving of chocolate can’t be anything but great.

Fertilizer Friday 11/6

I have a couple of Christmas cactus blooms getting ready to open and my African violet is still showing it’s pretty pink flowers that sparkle in the light.

My showoffs this week though, are a dozen roses that fill my house with their beauty and color.

A gift from my sweetie because he knows I need a flower fix this time of year.

Fertrilizer Friday!

Since I was carelessly laying on the beach last week, I am more than ready to join in on this week’s Fertilizer Friday. It is amazing how behind you can get in your garden when you miss just one week. Now that I have caught up with all the work I plan on spending this weekend “smelling the roses”. Gardening Gone Wild Picture This Photo Contest Winner is Posted 6/27

In an earlier post, I submitted 3 photos in the Gardening Gone Wild Picture This Photo Contest. The subject was roses. I am honored to say that one of my pictures was chosen for first place.

Many really great photos of roses were submitted. Southern CA garden photojournalist Debra Lee Baldwin had the tough job of judging the contest. This is a copy of their post announcing the winner:

A big thank you to all who entered and an ovation for your rose photos. Many of our 31 entrants submitted the full allotment of three photos, so I had close to 100 to judge—a daunting yet delightful task.

Our winner Tes seduced me with her tight shot of ‘Hot Cocoa’. I like the way the way sunlight shines through the water drops. Exquisite lighting also emphasizes the translucence of the petals and their felty texture. The lines draw the viewer into the center of the flower, and by illustrating the bloom’s intrinsic geometry, interpret the concept of “rose” in a fresh new way. Tes, take a bow!

Gardening Gone Wild Picture It Photo Contest for June ~ ROSES

Gardening Gone Wild is hosting their monthly photo contest. The Subject is Roses. Weeeeellllll, I just love roses.

The following 3 pictures are my entries.

This is the rose in my garden that I think is easily one of the most beautiful roses I have ever seen~ It is a russet-colored floribunda named Hot Cocoa.

The texture of the petals and the shiny leaves make it stand out from other roses.I watched the flowers unfurl. When it is was a bud – I was sure that it was the prettiest thing I had ever seen, then it opened and it was even more pretty, now when it’s in full bloom, it is even more beautiful. The color is extraordinary, and I also really love the name~ how could a rose named after chocolate be anything but delicious?

I took this picture last week at Cayuga Lake. I couldn’t resist photographing them, they looked very old fashioned and romantic.
